It's been a while since we posted but we are back in action! Thought we'd kick off our return with an inspiring article about Tanitoluwa Adewumi (Tani as he is known), an 8 year-old Nigerian refugee in New York City who recently became a New York State chess champion. Tani and his family experienced homelessness and many other obstacles refugees and immigrants face in the US. The original NYTimes story resulted in Tani and his family finding a home, new jobs, and Tani receiving several scholarships to private schools in NYC. The best part of the story in my opinion: despite receiving these scholarship offers, Tani and his family decided to keep Tani in his public school with his mother, Oluwatoyin Adewumi, saying, "[P.S. 116] showed confidence in Tanitoluwa, so we return the confidence.”
